Daily News is a daily newspaper founded in 1919 in New York City. It is the first U.S. daily printed in tabloid format, and at its peak was one of the most widely circulated newspapers in the world. It is currently owned by tronc, the publishing operations of the Tribune Company, and is based in Lower Manhattan. The newspaper is known for its sensationalist headlines and its long-running rivalry with the right-leaning New York Post.
A century ago, the citizens of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, relied on their local newspaper to provide a window into their community’s politics and life. But with the rise of digital technology, hundreds of small papers have closed, creating “news deserts” across the United States. Many of the displaced journalists have left the industry altogether, and citizens like those in McKeesport now must learn to make sense of their communities on their own—and to separate fact from fiction.
This story of one American town’s efforts to fill the gap left by its shuttered local newspaper offers a poignant and urgent look at an emerging problem in the digital age. Written by Andrew Conte, a journalist with a long history of covering local issues, Death of the Daily News is a searching and deeply reported look at a troubling trend that’s already playing out in towns across America.
