For over 130 years, the Yale Daily News has been the primary source of news and debate at Yale. It is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States and is financially and editorially independent from the university. Founded in 1878, it is published each weekday during the academic year and serves the campus community of Yale and New Haven. The News also publishes a weekly Friday supplement, WKND and several annual special issues including the Yale-Harvard Game Day Issue, the Commencement Issue, and the First Year Issue. Many of the paper’s student editors, writers and contributors have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public service. They include William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver, Garry Trudeau, Strobe Talbott, and others.

Shareholders of Tribune Publishing, which owns the Chicago Tribune and New York Daily News, voted to approve a takeover deal backed by cost-slashing hedge fund Alden Global Capital. Opposition to the deal is bubbling up in the form of three legal fights, plans for multicity rallies, and written pleas from journalists.

The News has been a leader in breaking news and investigative reporting. Its coverage of the September 11 attacks was groundbreaking and paved the way for later tabloid newspapers to develop the same techniques for delivering breaking stories quickly. The News has been at the forefront of experimenting with new technologies, including digital publishing and mobile applications. In addition to its website and app, the News has a number of mobile-only products, including the YDN Livestream, an interactive map that tracks Hurricane Irma, and a new podcast called The Morning News.

The Yale Daily News Historical Archive, an online collection of articles from the paper between 1922 and 1996, is hosted by the Yale Library. An anonymous alumnus has made a major gift to the Library to support the continued development of the archive. The gift has facilitated the migration of the archives to a modern platform and the addition of issues from 1996 to present. It has also helped ensure the ongoing maintenance and preservation of the collection. The archive can be accessed here. In addition to the archive, YDN offers a daily newsletter with breaking news from across the world, as well as a variety of special features and topical sections.
